Thomas Smith brings a wealth of experience and compassion to his role as Clinical Addictions Therapist at the Birmingham Recovery Center and is dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey to recovery. Before joining the BRC Thomas was an ADMH Certified Recovery Support Specialist for 7 years working for various area treatment facilities before landing at UAB’s Community Justice Initiative (Jefferson County Treatment Courts) as a Peer Counselor while completing his education. He holds a bachelor's and a master's in social work from the University of Alabama @ Birmingham. As a person in long-term recovery from substance use disorder himself, Thomas understands the challenges and triumphs of the recovery process firsthand. For the past seven years, he has been an integral part of the therapeutic recovery community, leveraging his expertise to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Thomas is deeply involved in the recovery community outside of his profession volunteering his time to support those in recovery. When at home he finds solace in writing poetry, strumming his guitar, and cherishing moments spent with his two grandchildren. Thomas is motivated by a sincere desire to help create a better future for this generation and the next. His genuine passion for serving the recovery community shines through in his work, as he strives to provide compassionate care and unwavering support to those in need.
